How Vitamin E Helps Mercury Toxicity

Vitamin E is regarded as a very useful supplement for those who are mercury toxic. Generally speaking, vitamin E provides protection against the oxidative damage that mercury causes. It is especially helpful for protecting the brain.

Vitamin E should be taken with selenium because the effectivness of both is enhanced when taken together.

"Vitamin E 1000+ IU is a general purpose lipid soluble antioxidant which is not toxic. It is useful in large amounts to counteract the damage mercury causes by catalyzing oxidation of cell membranes. Vitamin E has been shown to be protective in brain sideases such as Parkinson's that are believed to be caused by oxidative stress (2). It can also indirectly inhibit arachidonic acid release from cell membranes by interfering with lipid peroxidation, which relieves allergies. It is also an immune system stimulant, and if you aren't getting enough (3) your immune response to infection will be poor. Vitamin E protects LDL cholesterol from being oxidized and forming arterioschlerotic plaques, and it protects all the essential fatty acids in your cell membranes from being destroyed from oxidation too."

(2) Mercury poisoning places oxidative stress on the brain.

(3) Megadoses aren't required, but it takes a lot more than the RDA. The exact amount is not known but 400 IU per day is certainly more than enough even for mercury toxic people.
